Dr Nuala McGrath BSc MSc PhD

Lecturer

Obtained an MSc in Biometry from Reading University in 1989 and has worked since then in HIV/AIDS; first in the USA (1989-1995) and then in Africa. Completed a PhD in Infectious Disease Epidemiology with Harvard School of Public Health, USA in 2002. Joined LSHTM in 2005, first as Field Director for Karonga Prevention Study, Malawi. Currently in South Africa with the Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies, University of KwaZulu Natal, and the Human Sciences Research Council (SA), with a 5 year Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellowship .

Involved in the School's Distance Based Learning MSc in Epidemiology since 2006: Module Organiser for EPM202 Statistical Methods in Epidemiology, and tutor for EPM101 and CT103.  

Research

My main current research areas are: couple dynamics, partnership patterns, sexual behaviour and HIV/STI risk, and the impact of antiretroviral treatment (ART) on these behaviours. In the past, I have also been involved in demographic surveillance systems, ART rollout, HIV treatment trials and in HIV prevention (prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV trials, and a microbicide trial).
