Ilias Mahmud BSOT MPH

Research Degree Student

Ilias completed his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Occupational Therapy from Dhaka University, Bangladesh in 2003 and started his career as a Lecturer and Research Associate for the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP). In 2007, he pursued his Masters in Public Health from the James P Grant School of Public Health of BRAC University, Bangladesh. Ilias received the 'Best Dissertation' award for his MPH independent study on health seeking behaviour of disabled people of Bangladesh. He joined the James P Grant School of Public Health in February 2007 and was involved in the following two research projects: 1) neglected sexual and reproductive health concerns of men and women; and 2) 'people living with HIV stigma index' study in Bangladesh. His fields of interest are disability, men's sexual and reproductive health, and health system research. He was a lecturer at James P Grant School of Public Health until November 2008, when he joined the LSHTM as a PhD student.

He is supervised by Lynda Clarke and George Ploubidis.

His PhD research is aimed at contributing to the knowledge base relating to the measurement of disabilities among adults with locomotor impairment in Bangladesh. The major objectives are:

1. To develop an instrument to measure disabilities among adults with locomotor impairment in Bangladesh.

2. To evaluate the psychometric properties of the instrument is being developed to measure disabilities among adults with locomotor impairments in Bangladesh.
