Landon Kuester BA MSc (Res)

Research Degree Student

Prior to commencing my doctoral studies at LSHTM in 2010, I received an MSc by research in social anthropology at the University of Edinburgh. Additionally, I hold a bachelors degree in community health and cultural anthropology from Brown University (USA).

Since 2006, I have had a range of practical experience in academic medicine, diplomacy and international development. From 2008-2009, I worked as a research assistant to the Chief of Infectious Diseases at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. In this position I served as a research consultant to the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation in Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam. As a consultant I worked on developing a medical practicum for health care workers in 05-06 incarceration camps. During 2007, I worked as a State Department intern to the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPRAR) in Nairobi, Kenya. Prior to this experience, I served as a visiting research fellow to the Centre for Social Development in Africa – University of Johannesburg, South Africa. Previous to my interest in anthropology and public health, I worked on a range of research projects in nuclear medicine and thoracic radiology at Harvard University (USA) (2004 -2005).

Research

I am currently conducting a longitudinal qualitative case study in a US prison system. My research aims to explore the social and administrative impact of a public health as it occurs across healthcare and correctional providers via their social interactions with inmates. The aim of this research is to examine how public health is incorporated into the rehabilitation process of inmates and parolees, as well as how this process might foster new forms of discipline, stigma and citizenship.

I am currently a member of The Centre for Research on Drugs and Health Behaviour.
