Research Degree Student

Theo started his career as a farm animal veterinarian working in the UK and abroad. He is now a recognised specialist in veterinary public health and population medicine.

He is currently conducting a PhD evaluating foot and mouth disease vaccines and vaccination programmes in endemic countries (Iran and Turkey).

Theo has worked as a consultant veterinary epidemiologist for various organisations including  the Food & Agriculture Organisation, OIE, Royal Veterinary Collge, African Union-Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources, Southern African Development Community and the European Food Safety Authority.

Teaching

Theo has run courses in risk analysis and epidemiology for government vets from various African nations. He has worked as a trainer on FAO foot and mouth disease real-time training courses aimed at EU government vets (held in Turkey).

He has taught a range of topics, from statistics and epidemiology to practical farm animal clinical skills.

Research

Besides foot and mouth disease, his recent work includes assessing different livestock health certification methods for Somali exports (involving risk analysis and economic evaluation). He has worked on a range of research projects including the Swiss Bovine viral diarrhoea eradication scheme, surveillance of wild bird avian influenza as well as the application of biosecurity during outbreaks, MRSA colonisation of piglets and the prioritisation of foodborne diseases as well as horizon scanning for threats to agriculture, biodiversitiy and public health originating from wildlife.
