Gaby Judah

Research Degree Student

I completed my undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge, specialising in Experimental Psychology. Following this I worked as a research assistant at LSHTM in the Hygiene Centre (2007-2009), under the supervision of Dr Robert Aunger.  During this time I worked on behaviour change of handwashing with soap, for the prevention of disease transmission. In 2009 I coordinated UK activities for Global Handwashing Day, which aims to raise the profile of handwashing with soap worldwide.

I was awarded an MRC/ESRC 1+3 studentship, and completed my MSc in Research Methods in Psychology at UCL in 2010 (with distinction).  In October 2010 I returned to LSHTM to start my PhD, supervised by Dr Robert Aunger.

Research

As a research assistant, I worked on a study comparing the effectiveness of messages based on different behaviour change constructs, in their ability to change handwashing behaviour.  The study was conducted at a UK service station, and measured actual handwashing behaviour using unobtrusive sensors.

As part of the Global Handwashing Day campaign in 2008, I coordinated a study investigating faecal bacteria on the hands of commuters in five major cities in the UK.

For my PhD I am investigating the process of habit formation, with reference to healthy behaviours (such as washing hands with soap, and dental hygiene behaviours).  I aim to establish some of the determinants of habit formation, in order to make behaviour change more sustainable.  I will be monitoring behaviour in households in the UK using a Real Time Location System, to compare the long term effectiveness of different types of interventions.
