Shabbar Jaffar MSc PhD FRCP

Professor of Epidemiology

PhD in Epidemiology, LSHTM (the natural history of HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections in Africa); FRCP (Edinburgh); MSc Biometry, Reading University. Lived and worked in The Gambia, Uganda and South Africa. He has been based at LSHTM for almost 20 years.

Research

Main research interests HIV, non-communicable diseases, health services/optimisation research. Director, Karonga Prevention Study. Co-PI of a large RCT of a complex intervention to reduce early mortality associated with antiretroviral therapy in Tanzania and Zambia. Previously co-PI of a large cluster-randomised trial comparing home-based with facility-based delivery of antiretroviral therapy in SE Uganda.

Chair of the EDCTP scientific strategy board. Joint Editor of Tropical Medicine and International Health. Head, Tropical Epidemiology Group.
