Currently I work for the Health Protection Agency developing and undertaking public health surveillance of infections among people who inject drugs in the UK. For part of my time I am seconded to the Centre for Research on Drugs and Health Behaviour (CRDHB), which is based at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Until April 2011 I was a Senior Lecturer at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, having joined the School when the CRDHB transferred from Imperial College in 2006. Prior to that I had worked for both the Public Health Laboratory Service (now part of the Health Protection Agency) and the University of Birmingham.

Teaching
I teach students taking the Drugs, Alcohol, Tabacco Use and Pubic Health module. I am interested in supervising PhDs or DrPHs focused on quantitative research concerning the public health aspects of problem drug use.
Research
My main research focus is on health harm among peole who inject drugs, in particular:
- the public health surveillance of bacterial and viral infections, and
- the monitoring of the associated risk and protective behaviours.
My other research interests include:
- estimating the prevalence of problem drug use;
- assessing the impact and delivery of interventions to reduce drug related health harm; and
- methods for studying 'hidden' or 'marginalised' populations.
I have also been involved in studies on sexual behaviour and the health of prison populations.
At the Health Protection Agency I co-ordinate the national Unlinked Anonymous survey of HIV and hepatitis among people who inject drugs, and a number of related collaborative public health research and surveillance projects.
I am also the Infectious Diseases Expert to the UK Focal Point of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction. During 2008 I was a member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs ad hoc Hepatitis C Prevention Working Group.
