Emeritus Professor of Community Nutrition

Ann Ashworth Hill is Emeritus Professor of Community Nutrition. Before joining the School in 1978 she worked for 13 years in Jamaica at the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit where her research included studies of energy metabolism in severe malnutrition and requirements for catch-up growth. For 5 years she was a member of the Jamaica Government Nutrition Advisory Council. In 2001, she received an Award of Excellence from the Caribbean Health Research Council for her pioneering and lifelong contributions to nutrition. At LSHTM her research has focused on interventions to improve growth and development and reduce child deaths. She advises WHO on improving hospital treatment of severe malnutrition and serves as facilitator on training courses worldwide. She co-convenes the Task Force on Malnutrition of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences. In 2003 she was elected Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

Research

Recent research includes projects in Brazil (effects of birth weight on morbidity, growth and cognitive function; interventions to promote breastfeeding; long-term effects of low birth weight on child development, behaviour and school achievement) and in South Africa (feasibility and impact of implementing WHO treatment guidelines for severe malnutrition; evaluation of feeding counselling in programmes to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV).
