Using data from HIV and demographic surveillance sites in the Alpha network in Eastern Africa, I will assess the validity of methods used to assign AIDS as a cause of death using verbal autopsy data. This is in anticipation of the routine use of VA in assigning cause of death in activities to monitor vital events.

I am also conducting a systematic review of the proportion of maternal and pregnancy-related mortality assigned to HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa.
