Mrs Ulla Griffiths (nee Kou)MSc

Lecturer in Health Economics

Ulla's primary expertice is on economic evaluation of health care interventions, in particular vaccines. Ulla has undertaken economic evaluations on numerous vaccines, primarily in low- and middle-income countries. She has considerable experience in treatment cost data collection, health related quality of life measurements and development of cost-effectiveness models. During 2006-2009, Ulla was Director of cost-effectiveness for the Hib Initiative, a project funded by the GAVI Alliance to expedite decision making about Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine in GAVI eligible countries. In addition to the work on vaccines, Ulla is also involved in economic evaluations of weight management interventions and eye care treatments.

Prior to joining LSHTM, Ulla worked for a health economics consultancy company in Denmark, and she spent six years at the World Health Organization in Geneva. Ulla has an MSc in Development Economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and an MSc in Economics from Copenhagen University. She expects to receive her PhD degree in early 2012.

Ulla is a module organiser on the Distance Learning Health Care Evaluation MSc module and she is a tutor for students studying for an MSc in Health Policy, Planning & Financing.

Research

Ulla's research focuses on the cost-effectiveness and financing of vaccines. Specific reseach topics include development of infectious disease models to be used for cost-effectiveness analysis, analysis of treatment cost data at various levels of the health care system, health seeking behaviour studies and assessment of health sector financing options.
