Dr Valentina Gallo MD, MSc, PhD

Lecturer of Epidemiology

Valentina Gallo is Clinical Lecturer in Epidemiology since September 2010 when she joined the School. Valentina is a neuroepidemiologist with both clinical neurological qualification and epidemiological background. She graduated in Medicine in 2000 at ‘la Sapienza’ University of Rome, where she also obtained her clinical qualification as Neurologist in 2005. She attended the MSc in Demography and Health at LSHTM in 2003-04. Currently Valentina maintains also a position as Research Associate at the School of Public Health, at Imperial College London working closely with Professor Paolo Vineis on a number of projects. At LSHTM Valentina is working on the C8 Health Project directly with Dr Tony Fletcher and the other members of the team on the health effect of pefluorinated compound exposure. Valentina main fields of interests include neuroepidemiology (she is currently investigating risk factors for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease); environmental, molecular, and social epidemiology.

Teaching

Valentina teaches Basic Epidemiology in Term 1 and Molecular Epidemiology in the Environmental Epidemiology course in Term 2

Research

Valentina is mainly interested in investigating environmental determinants of neurological diseases (dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, and others), and their interaction with other risk factors and genetic predisposition. She is also interested in exploring the value of using biomarkers in epidemiological research, and in the theoretical work behind molecular epidemiological studies. In particular she is interested in exploring the health effect of the exposure to perfluorinated compounds at different doses, in understanding the biological mechanisms behind this effect, and in producing recommendations. Finally, Valentina is also interested in contributing to the understanding of social determinants of health and diseases.
