Research Fellow

I graduated in Zoology with Parasitology as my Special Subject at the University of Exeter. After postgraduate training at the School I joined King's College London where I worked until 1997 as Professor of Zoology and Professor of Parasite Immunology and also served as Dean of Science in the University of London. After 'retirement' I was appointed Professor of Physic at Gresham College and later became Provost of the College of which I am now a Fellow. I have served on various WHO and other international and national expert committees and have held visiting professorships at UK and overseas universities. I have been Editor of Trends in Parasitology,  Parasitology and the Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and and serve on several editorial boards. I am a member of the Open University's Research Degrees Management Group and my current interests are in the history of tropical medicine and parasitology.

My current involvement in the School is with the Distance Learning courses as Module Organiser and Tutor for the Infectious Diseases Core Unit, Biology of Infectious Diseases. I lecture on on E1-3177 Immunology of Parasitic Infections and also give lectures in the Medical School at the University of Newcastle.

Research

My research interests are in the history of tropical diseases particularly the history of parasitology, infectious diseases and warfare and bioterrorism. I have produced a CD covering 6000 years of tropical medicine and am now writing a History of Parasitology.
