Jo Borghi BA MSc PhD

Lecturer in Health Economics

I first joined the LSHTM in 1999 where I was involved in economic evaluation studies of maternal health care programmes in West Africa and Argentina.

I left the School in 2001 to travel to Latin America for a year, where I learnt Spanish and became involved in a variety of economic studies with researchers in Mexico, Nicaragua and Brazil.

I returned to LSHTM in 2002 as a joint appointment with the International Perinatal Health Unit at the Institute of Child Health. Alongside researchers at the Institute of Child Health, I carried out an economic evaluation of a women's group intervention to improve maternal and newborn health in rural Nepal. This study became the basis of my PhD which I completed in 2006. I subsequently became involved in a similar study in a tribal area of India. During this period, I also worked on a study in Bangladesh looking at the cost implications of delivery at home with a skilled attendant compared to in health facilities.

I am currently based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with the Ifakara Health Institute, working on health systems and health care financing issues.
