Ruth Ashton BA MSc

Research Degree Student

After gaining a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, I completed the MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases at LSHTM in 2008. I joined Malaria Consortium shortly after, working on a range of malaria and neglected tropical disease operational research projects in Ethiopia, Uganda and South Sudan.

I began a part-time PhD at the school in September 2010, supported by the John-Henry Memorial Fund. I continue to work for Malaria Consortium and am currently based at their Africa Regional Office in Kampala, Uganda.

Research

My current research is focused on malaria surveillance and epidemic detection in Ethiopia. This involves using a combination of parasitological and serological indicators to define areas of malaria endemicity through GIS modelling. I'm also investigating the potential of simple malaria epidemic detection systems within the community health worker and primary school systems.
