I am mixed-methods researcher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) working on the health determinants, systems and policies in transitional settings, particularly those affected by armed conflict and forced migration. This has focused principally on mental health and non-communicable diseases. I have worked on studies with conflict-affected populations in Lebanon, Ukraine, Georgia, northern Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As Principal Investigator, I have received over £16 million in research funding from funders including the Wellcome Trust, GCRF/UKRI, ESRC, European Commission, DFID, and USAID.

I was Editor-in-Chief of the BMC journal Conflict and Health from 2011 to 2021, and I am on the Editorial Board of Refugee Survey Quarterly. I was the Guest Editor for the journal of Migration and Health’s series in internal displacement and health (2021-2022), and Guest Editor for the Lancet series on public health in humanitarian crises (2017). I was a funding panel member of the R2HC humanitarian health research funding scheme (2016 to 2022). I am on the Board of Directors for the NGO the International Alliance for Diabetes Action (IADA).

Teaching

I co-organise the module 'Management and Evaluation of Public Health Projects in Humanitarian Crises' for our new Distance Learning MSc on 'Public Health in Humanitarian Crises'. My other teaching activities include lecturing on the Conflict and Health module and the Diploma in Tropical Nursing, and supervising PhD and MSc students.

Research

My current research focuses mainly on mental health and armed conflict. This is primarily through two main projects. The first is the CHANGE project which is developing and evaluating a mental health and harmful alcohol use intervention for refugees in Uganda and conflict-affected persons in Ukraine. The second is the GOAL study which examines health governance and financing for supporting mental health responses for Syrian refugees and vulnerable Lebanese in Lebanon. I am also involved in a number of other projects, including the Afya Consortium project supporting health responses to humanitarian crises in Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
