Dr Lucy Pembrey

Assistant Professor

United Kingdom

I am an epidemiologist with expertise in childhood infections, asthma and allergic disease, based in the Department of Medical Statistics at LSHTM since 2016. I coordinate an international study to investigate asthma phenotypes and I lead studies within the Born in Bradford birth cohort on infections, antibiotic exposure, asthma and allergic disease.

I joined LSHTM in 2008 to work in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology. Before that, I worked at the UCL Institute of Child Health on mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis C virus. During my time at ICH I completed an MSc in Epidemiology at LSHTM (2000) and my PhD (2006).

Teaching

I am a co-module organiser for EPM105, Writing and Reviewing Epidemiological Papers, one of the core DL Epidemiology modules. I also teach on the London-based MSc Epidemiology including Extended Epidemiology.

Research

Since 2016, I have coordinated the World Asthma Phenotypes (WASP) Study in five centres in Brazil, Ecuador, New Zealand, Uganda and the UK, which was funded by the European Research Council. I currently coordinate the Causes and MEchanisms foR non-atopic Asthma in children (CAMERA) study, also funded by the ERC.

I have worked with the Born in Bradford (BiB) birth cohort study since 2008, including leading the Wellcome funded BiB Allergy and Infection study to investigate the effect of early herpesvirus infections on the risk of allergic disease in children. I lead an ongoing NIHR-funded study to investigate the long-term impacts of pre-incision antibiotics for caesarean section on the risk of asthma and allergic disease in children, using the Born in Bradford data. I also collaborate with colleagues at ISGlobal, Barcelona on a study of early infections and a range of later health outcomes, which pools data from three European birth cohorts.
